The facts about saltillos

SALTILLOS are handmade from Mexico. They are very earthy and have a lot of features. Here are just a few of characteristics:

Saltillos:

  1. Are not all flat.
  2. Are not all the same thickness.
  3. Are all not the same size.
  4. Have little craters or dents
  5. H have chipped edges
  6. Are not all square
  7. Are not all the same color. They even have shade variations within the same tile.
  8. Have an occasional crack in the surface.
  9. Have sandy backs due to the makers dumping the wet tile on the ground to dry in the sun before baking.
  10. Are inclined to alkali in the soil. To keep
problems to a limit they must be properly sealed and kept that way.
  11. Have an occasional animal print, although these
are a rare find, maybe you will get lucky.

These are not defects. They are what make the Saltillo so handsome. Raw Saltillos are very good looking and after they are installed, grouted, and sealed they look very nice. Saltillos are very easy to maintain and literally last forever. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
